Gluten-Free Ham Baguette Sandwich: The Parisian Jambon-Beurre, Done Right

Gluten-Free Ham Baguette Sandwich: The Parisian Jambon-Beurre, Done Right

October 2026

Some sandwiches need a long list of ingredients. This one needs a great baguette, and finally, a gluten-free one is up to the job.

In Paris, the jambon-beurre is the everyday lunch: a crusty baguette, good butter, thinly sliced ham, and nothing to hide behind. For years, a gluten-free ham baguette sandwich meant settling for bread that was dry or crumbly. Not anymore. Our newest Large Baguette warms up with a crackling crust and a tender middle, exactly what this classic deserves. We kept the Parisian formula (butter on one side, a whisper of Dijon on the other) and added a handful of crisp frisée for crunch. Lunch is served in about fifteen minutes.

What is a jambon-beurre?

Jambon-beurre means "ham-butter," and that's the whole idea: a split baguette, spread with butter and filled with thin slices of cooked ham. Parisians sometimes call it le parisien. Wikipedia With so few ingredients, every one has to be good, starting with the bread. Here's our gluten-free version, made with a Gifted Breads baguette.

Ingredients

Serves 2 · About 15 minutes (warming time per package instructions) · Gluten-free

  • 1 Gifted Breads Large Baguette (or 2 Gifted Breads Demi-Baguettes)
  • 2 tbsp good salted butter, softened (use a plant-based butter to keep it dairy-free)
  • 1–2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 5 oz thinly sliced French-style cooked ham (jambon de Paris)
  • 1 generous handful frisée or curly green leaf lettuce, washed and dried
  • Optional: 2 oz thinly sliced Gruyère, cornichons to serve

Always check labels on the ham, mustard, and any cheese to confirm they're gluten-free. Our Large Baguette contains egg, so this recipe is not egg-free or vegan. Check the package for full ingredient and allergen information.

How to make a gluten-free ham baguette sandwich

  1. Warm the baguette. Heat your Gifted Breads Large Baguette following the package instructions, until the crust is crisp and crackles when you press it.
  2. Slice it open. Let it cool for a minute, then cut it lengthwise, leaving one long edge attached so it opens like a book.
  3. Butter and mustard. Spread the softened butter generously on one cut side. Spread the Dijon very thinly on the other. It should add a little tang, not take over.
  4. Layer the ham. Fold the ham slices loosely rather than laying them flat, so the sandwich stays tender and full. Add the Gruyère now, if using.
  5. Add the greens. Tuck the frisée along one side so a little peeks out of the baguette.
  6. Wrap and serve. Close the sandwich, press gently, and wrap it in parchment. Slice it in half to share, with cornichons on the side.

Baker's tip

Fill the baguette while it's still slightly warm. The butter melts just a little into the crumb, and the parchment keeps the crust crisp. For the best texture, enjoy it within a few hours of making it.

Make it your own

Dairy-free jambon-beurre

Swap in your favorite plant-based butter and skip the Gruyère. The ham and Dijon carry plenty of flavor.

Jambon-beurre with cheese

Thin slices of Gruyère make it heartier. Comté works beautifully too.

Picnic-ready

Wrap tightly in parchment and tie with string. It travels well for a few hours. For the crispest crust, eat it the same day.
